Announcing the cancellation of the Good Games Championship 2020
It's no secret 2020 has been, and continues to be, a very tough year.
As such, it is with a heavy heart that we have decided to Cancel the Good Games Championship for 2020.
What does this mean?
It means that for the rest of the season, we will no longer be recording points, updating standings or providing prizes for the championships.
Our remaining Premier Events have been cancelled, as well.
That said - Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh! organised play are still going ahead at many of our stores, please check with your local Good Games store for their schedule, and for information on social distancing and restrictions as relevant to their area.
For those of you who have already won prizes, we are going to honour them:
- Any prizes that 2019 Store Champions should receive will be honoured.
- Any prizes that players are due from points accumulated this year will be honoured
- As things like SuperNova and PAX have been cancelled we won't be able to honour these, however, if some of these do go ahead we will honour where we can. We are still in discussions with the con organisers to see if these prizes can be transffered to the 2021 season. As soon as we know more, we'll tell you.
Why are you canceling?
A very fair question.
We came to this decision because several months of the season have been lost due to COVID-19. Even though many of our stores are returning to events, not all stores are in the same situation, and therefore we have varied play experiences; limited play space, limited player numbers. This means that some GGC participants would be at a disadvantage simply due to where they live - this is the opposite of our vision of a tournament series that unites players across the country.
This is not what any of us wanted for 2020 (or ever, really).
So what next?
To replace the remainder of this year we are looking at still running a Store Championship event and possibly an end of year Nationals event.
However, both of these things are reliant on the continued easing of social distancing requirements, and seeing as we are still in the midst of the pandemic, we cannot official announce anything at this stage.
We plan to rebuild the Good Games Championship for 2021, working with Wizards of the Coast, Konami and our stores to come up with a new plan for 2021.
At Good Games, nothing is more important to us than our community, and we ask for your understanding when we say that these decisions have not been made lightly.
We sincerely hope, for a number of reasons, that we can come together again in the 2021 season, sling some spells and duel some monsters.
